Project Overview

Data Aid is supporting a project aimed at assessing and improving waste management systems in Adamawa State. The initiative seeks to address the growing challenges of urban waste disposal, environmental safety, and operational efficiency. With rapid urbanization and increasing waste generation, the current waste management infrastructure is under significant strain. The project will evaluate existing practices, identify inefficiencies, and propose sustainable solutions to enhance waste collection, processing, and disposal. Key focus areas include establishing waste collection points, recycling centers, and landfill sites, as well as analyzing waste generation patterns to optimize resource use and minimize environmental impact.

Role Summary

Data Aid is seeking experienced Waste Management Specialists with expertise in implementation, policy analysis, and technology integration. The selected candidates will play a critical role in evaluating current waste management systems, proposing policy improvements, and integrating advanced technologies to promote sustainable practices.

Key Responsibilities

Implementation

  • Design and implement strategies for sustainable waste management.
  • Develop monitoring frameworks to track progress and evaluate effectiveness.
  • Conduct site visits to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
  • Create training programs for local stakeholders on best practices in waste management.
  • Identify and mitigate risks during project implementation, including developing contingency plans.

Policy Analysis and Compliance

  • Review existing waste management policies and regulations at national and local levels.
  • Identify policy gaps and recommend reforms to improve governance and compliance.
  • Engage with stakeholders, including government agencies, private waste operators, and community groups, to address policy challenges.
  • Prepare policy briefs and recommendations to enhance waste management frameworks.
  • Conduct training sessions on regulatory compliance for waste management operators.

Technology Integration

  • Assess current technologies used in waste collection, segregation, and monitoring.
  • Recommend and design integrated technology solutions, such as GPS-enabled collection systems and waste tracking platforms.
  • Develop a technology roadmap with cost estimates and phased implementation plans.
  • Coordinate pilot testing of new technologies and provide technical support to local teams.
  • Draft technical specifications for procuring technology systems aligned with international standards.
  • Qualifications and Experience
  • Advanced degree in Environmental Science, Public Policy, Waste Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in waste management, policy analysis, or technology integration.
  • Proven track record of leading and managing waste management projects with innovative solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of national and international waste management policies and best practices.
  • Proficiency in digital tools, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), waste management software, and data visualization platforms.
  • Experience with mobile data collection platforms like KoboToolbox or Open Data Kit for surveys and monitoring.

Key Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret complex data and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Proven project management experience, particularly in multi-stakeholder projects.
  • Familiarity with waste management technologies and software solutions.
  • Expertise in developing and evaluating policy frameworks for waste management systems.
