Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, is a global humanitarian organization dedicated to providing medical assistance to populations in crisis. Operating in Nigeria since 1996, MSF offers aid to victims of natural disasters, armed conflicts, and other emergencies, irrespective of race, religion, or political affiliation.
We are currently seeking a Counselor Educator to join our team in Sokoto for the Noma & Emergency Response Project.
Main Objective of the Role
The Counselor Educator will provide counseling and educational sessions to patients, adhering to MSF protocols and procedures, to enhance their psychosocial well-being.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct psychosocial assessments and develop tailored treatment plans for patients.
- Offer individual and group counseling, as well as psycho-educational sessions to patients and their families.
- Provide emotional support, psycho-stimulation, and Psychological First Aid (PFA) to those in need.
- Refer patients to specialized mental health services when necessary.
- Collaborate with health promotion, medical, and outreach teams to raise awareness on mental health, psychosocial support (MHPSS), sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and malnutrition.
- Organize focus group discussions to identify community needs and support culturally sensitive initiatives.
- Maintain accurate records, ensure confidentiality, and report activities regularly.
- Participate in staff training, sensitization sessions, and team meetings.
- Adhere to MSF policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Support the preparation of MHPSS reports and ensure data quality.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
Education: A university degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
Experience: Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience. Experience with an NGO is an advantage.
Languages: Proficiency in English and the local language is essential.
Skills: Strong computer literacy (Word, Excel, and internet).
Competencies: Results-oriented, teamwork, flexibility, commitment to MSF principles, and service-oriented mindset.
