Are you passionate about conservation and skilled in communication? The Small Mammal Conservation Organization (SMACON) is seeking a dedicated and creative Communications Officer to join their team. This is a full-time, on-site role based in Cross River State, Nigeria.

About SMACON:

Founded in 2016 during a hike through the breathtaking Afi Mountains Wildlife Sanctuary, SMACON is committed to protecting small mammals and other often-overlooked species. While the sanctuary focuses on conserving megafauna, SMACON strives to ensure all wildlife receives equal attention and protection.

Role Overview:

As the Communications Officer, you will play a key role in raising awareness and mobilizing support for SMACON’s conservation initiatives. You will be responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies, managing media relations, and creating engaging content to amplify the organization’s mission.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write and manage organizational reports, including grant reports, quarterly updates, and the annual report.
  • Draft press releases for media outlets and design communication materials such as banners, flyers, and brochures.
  • Capture and edit high-quality photographs for organizational use.
  • Update and maintain SMACON’s website to reflect current statistics, milestones, and strategic messaging.
  • Collaborate with the Chief of Partnerships and Engagement Officer (CPEO) to design and execute social media campaigns.
  • Develop, post, and monitor content across SMACON’s social media platforms.
  • Prepare monthly media activity reports and support internal and external communication efforts.
  • Create materials for events, outreach initiatives, and crisis response plans.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Graphic Design, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in communications, preferably within a non-profit or conservation-focused organization.
  • Proficiency in content management systems (CMS), social media tools, and graphic design software.
  • Strong writing skills for reports, press releases, newsletters, and social media content.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing trends and strategies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail.
  • Experience in photography and photo editing is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
