Empowering Africa’s Public Health Workforce: The African Epidemic Service Program 2025 (AES)
In a world where diseases can spread rapidly across borders, Africa faces unique public health challenges. To address these, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has launched the African Epidemic Service (AES), a transformative program aimed at strengthening the continent’s public health workforce. This initiative is designed to equip professionals with the skills needed to prevent, detect, and respond to disease outbreaks effectively.
About Africa CDC
Africa CDC, an autonomous technical agency of the African Union (AU), is dedicated to enhancing Africa’s capacity to tackle health threats. Its mission is rooted in science, policy, and data-driven interventions. In 2018, Africa CDC established a Task Force for Workforce Development, which created a framework focusing on three critical areas: field epidemiology, laboratory leadership, and public health informatics. These pillars form the foundation of the AES program.
The African Epidemic Service (AES)
The AES is a prestigious, two-year, competency-based training program that aims to empower public health professionals across Africa. It offers three specialized tracks:
Epidemiology Track
This track trains professionals in applied epidemiology, equipping them with the skills to identify, track, and respond to disease outbreaks. Fellows gain hands-on experience through fieldwork and classroom learning, preparing them to lead public health initiatives. The first cohort of 10 Fellows has already completed their training and is now deployed across Africa. Applications are now open for the second cohort.
Laboratory Leadership Track
Focused on strengthening Africa’s laboratory infrastructure, this track enhances the technical and managerial skills of laboratory professionals. Fellows learn to manage complex operations, improve diagnostic capabilities, and respond swiftly to outbreaks.
Public Health Informatics Track
This track emphasizes the integration of data and technology in public health systems. Fellows develop expertise in health data management, analysis, and the use of digital tools for disease surveillance and response.
