NUC Elevates Medical-Related Courses in Nigerian Universities to Doctoral Level
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced the elevation of specific undergraduate programs in the medical field from Bachelor’s degree status to doctoral level in Nigerian universities.
This significant development was disclosed on Wednesday in a statement by Franca Chukwuonwo, the Acting Director of Public Affairs for the NUC.
Purpose of the Upgrade
The NUC explained that the decision to elevate these programs was motivated by the need to:
- Introduce more extensive clinical and practical training.
- Expand the coverage of foundational courses.
- Improve students’ clinical competencies.
- Provide in-depth coverage of all specialty areas.
This initiative aligns with international standards for professional training, ensuring Nigerian graduates remain globally competitive in their respective fields.
Extended Program Duration
As part of the restructuring, the duration of the affected programs has been increased from five to six years. The additional year will accommodate an enhanced curriculum and comprehensive clinical training, equipping students with the knowledge and skills required for professional excellence.
Upgraded Programs
According to the statement, the following programs have been upgraded to doctoral status in line with the NUC’s Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) and Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS):
- Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D)
- Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT)
- Doctor of Optometry (O.D)
These revised programs will incorporate advanced clinical sessions aimed at raising the standard of healthcare education and enhancing professional preparedness in Nigeria.
The NUC reassured stakeholders that these reforms are part of its ongoing commitment to improving education quality in critical sectors such as healthcare, thereby producing graduates who meet global professional standards.
